- Believe it or not, I still have a i286 box (IBM-AT clone) still running
- SVR2, and it acts as my current interface to the Internet at home. Not
- only is the TCP/IP tools and UUCP working on it, but it is running news
- software, packet-ham interfaces, lab instrument software (through a IEEE
- 488 interface), and it also makes a good home controller -- to run the
- thermostat, feed the cat, articulate the lights when I am not home, water
- the grass in summer, alarm monitoring, and so on. I even have a decent
- customizable database system on it (DataFlex) to hold procedures and
- parameters.
-
- Don't discount those old boxes. I used to work for a company that still
- has one running in their office (old Motorola box, but same idea), and
- they are using it as their primary Internet interface and Informix database
- server, as well as a dialin server for those working at home. The database
- is the primary repository for employee information, time-sheets/time
- billing, office documents -- almost everything for a paperless office.
- It is also their primary email server, though I think they gateway it from
- their MS Windows email setup.
